Scary History Essays
I spent the day reading history essays written by 8th graders about the Gettysburg address. Lets just say that I was less than impressed with some of the discussions about the ideals contained within President Lincoln's address and how those ideals impact us today. Most of these students have been taught that the civil war was strictly about slavery and many students tried to make correlations between the civil war and the conflicts the US is involved in today. It was just really disheartening to think this is what our children are being taught about our history.

This is understandable since most of the time, history is memorized rather than actually understood and analyzed. It doesn't mean that it should be tolerated though.
8th grade Teachers also only have an hour to 45 minutes to teach their class. I don't believe they have time to discuss the other reasons for the Civil War. That would be more reasonable for a College class to do.
